A list of the major keycap profiles

The Major Profiles

That was a lot of info.

Fortunately, you mainly have to remember only a select few, since not all combinations exist.

Cherry Profile

A fairly low-height sculpted set available in a wide variety of color schemes.
Significantly more popular than all other profiles. Very comfortable to type on.
Its name comes from the fact that this is the profile used by genuine Cherry brand boards.

  • Keytop: Cylindrical
  • Sculpt: Sculpted
  • Legends: Doubleshot, Dyesub, Blank
  • Material: ABS, PBT
  • Thickness: Thick
  • Manufacturers: GMK, JTK, EnjoyPBT, NPKC, Cherry, etc

OEM/Filco Profile

Very common on retail keyboards.
A taller, choppier sculpt than Cherry; makes it somewhat uncomfortable to type on.

  • Legends: Doubleshot, Dyesub, Blank
  • Material: ABS, PBT
  • Thickness: Thin

MDA Profile

Yes, the names are likely getting confusing at this point.
This one is similar to XDA, but sculpted in a Cherry-like sculpt instead of uniform.
Compared to SA, this has a lower height, less aggressive sculpt, and larger/shallower top surface.

  • Keytop: Spherical
  • Sculpt: Sculpted
